Bayero Law Review
The Bayero Law Review (BLR) is a double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal published twice a year by the Faculty of Law, Bayero University Kano. It publishes original scholarship across all fields of law, with particular strength in Islamic law and in the constitutional, criminal, commercial and international questions arising from Nigerian statute, case law and policy.
Our purpose
The Review exists to give rigorous legal scholarship from Nigeria and the wider African continent a permanent, freely accessible home, and to bring the work of the Faculty — which teaches and researches across four departments: Islamic Law, Public Law, Private and Commercial Law, and International Law and Jurisprudence — into conversation with legal research everywhere.
Kano is a place where legal pluralism is not a theoretical proposition. Common law, customary law and Islamic law operate side by side in the same courts, over the same disputes, for the same litigants. The Review takes that as an advantage: it welcomes scholarship that treats Islamic law as living law, that examines how the three systems meet, and that addresses the legal problems of northern Nigeria with the seriousness they are rarely given in the wider literature.
Open access
Everything the Review publishes is free to read, download and share from the moment it appears. There is no subscription, no paywall and no embargo period. Publication is funded by author charges rather than by readers.
Scope and submissions
The subject areas we cover, the methods we accept and the kinds of manuscript that fall outside our remit are set out on the Aims & Scope page.
Submissions are made through this website. The Author Guidelines carry everything an author needs: manuscript types and length limits, formatting and citation, how to submit, how peer review works, fees, publication ethics and copyright.
